summary of

Trends of the Japanese Internet Uses in 2000

Daisuke Tsuji

in   JSICR Annual Report 2000, 2001, pp.55-70

This paper reports the results of two survey researches, concerning the present status and change of the Internet uses among Japanese people. I focus especially on the three forms of Internet use, namely WWW, e-mail and online community. The result of Survey-A carried out across all over Japan in 2000, shows that; There are more male, young, high-educated and high-income among Internet users than non-users. Those who use WWW everyday are less than 40%, and e-mail everyday less than 50%. Active users of online communities are less than 25%.
I make a more detailed analysis on the data of Survey-A and Survey-B, which was carried out in 1996, 97 and 98. The results suggest that WWW and e-mail will be used more than now. But as regards the participation in online communities, the analysis suggests a possibility that in the future it will be relatively less rather than more.
